Stand at 11,260 feet (3,432 meters) above sea level on Costa Rica's highest active volcano. Visitors come to look directly into massive craters above the cloud line.
The national park sits 34 miles (55 km) east of San José. The summit features a cold, windy climate with temperatures dropping to 41–48°F (5–9°C). You must pre-book a timed entry ticket online through the SINAC website before arriving. The front gate does not sell tickets.
Gates open at 8:00 AM, and the last entry is at 2:00 PM. Arrive as early as possible during the dry season (December to April) to avoid the thick morning clouds that often block visibility. Adult entry costs $15, while children ages 2 to 12 cost $5.
30-45 minsArrive early for views
This viewing area looks directly into the massive main crater. The crater sometimes holds a bright green or turquoise rain-fed lake. Arrive by 8:00 AM for your best chance of a clear view before the clouds roll in. Do not cross the safety barriers.
15-20 minsShort walk
This slightly smaller secondary crater is visible from the short walking loop around the summit sector. Look closely at the steep ash deposits and mineral-stained walls. The walk is flat, but the high altitude can make you tire quickly.
1-2 hoursSeparate entry fee
This secondary area of the park offers miles of hiking trails through cool, misty pine woods. It sits at a lower altitude than the main crater. You need a separate ticket and entrance fee to visit this sector.
