Your day starts at Costa Rica's highest active volcano and ends in an agricultural valley. Temperatures fluctuate wildly between the two zones. Layering is the only way to stay comfortable throughout the trip.

What to wear irazu volcano?

Wear a warm jacket, long pants, and closed-toe shoes.

The summit of Irazú Volcano sits at 11,260 feet (3,432 meters) above sea level. Temperatures frequently drop to 41–48°F (5–9°C). You will need winter-level protection, especially in the early morning.

How should I dress for the Orosi Valley?

Wear lighter base layers like t-shirts and breathable fabrics.

As you leave the volcano and descend into the Orosi Valley, the temperature rises significantly. Take off your heavy jacket and wear lighter clothing for the valley and Lankester Botanical Gardens.

Do I need rain gear?

Yes, you should pack a rain jacket or poncho year-round.

Weather changes rapidly at the volcano summit and in the valley. Even during the dry season from December to April, unexpected rain or mist is common. Pack a lightweight rain layer to stay dry.

What kind of shoes are best?

Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes.

You will walk on paved paths at the craters and garden paths at Lankester. You do not need heavy hiking boots. Avoid sandals, as they will leave your feet freezing at the summit.

Should I bring sun protection?

Pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for the trip.

The UV index is high at 11,000+ feet. Even if the air feels freezing, the sun will burn exposed skin quickly. Apply sunscreen before you walk to the crater viewpoints.

What else should I pack?

Bring bug repellent and a water bottle.

Mosquitoes are not an issue at the cold volcano summit. However, you will want bug repellent when walking through the lower-altitude Lankester Gardens and Orosi Valley. Keep a water bottle handy to stay hydrated.
