Packing for multiple climates
You will experience vastly different weather zones in a single day. The summit of Irazu is 11,260 feet above sea level. Temperatures here can drop to 41–48°F (5–9°C). Bring a warm jacket, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. The wind can be fierce, and the UV index is very high, so sunscreen and sunglasses are mandatory.
By noon, when you descend to the Orosi Valley and Lankester Gardens, the climate becomes warm and tropical. Wear layers so you can shed your heavy jacket. Bug repellent is useful for the lower-altitude garden trails.
